Svetlana has written a great paper on metadata used for educational resources (also called learning objects). Click here to download it.
I'd like our Metadata Team to compare the fields in the various schemes Svetlana has identified and do two things:
1. Evaluate the fields we have in our current database and, in the light of Svetlana's work, suggest any new fields we should add. Keep in mind that it is more important for our users to be able to find the items of interest to them than to make it easy to enter the metadata.
2. Create controlled vocabulary lists for each field you recommend for our database. This includes vocabulary lists for fields we already have as well as new ones.

This is a complex task. To accomplish it the five of you will have to talk together, decide on a set of executable tasks and figure out which person has the best skills for each task. Then you have to urge each other to complete your assignments and coordinate a report to me.
The schemas referenced in Svetlana's paper can be found as follows:
LRMI
OER Commons
European SchoolNet's MELT
IEEE LOM
Achievement Standards Network (ASM)

Please let me know if you need me to coordinate this activity or if one of you is willing to manage it.
Thank you, Liza

1.Following Liza's instructions yesterday, I updated each of our team members pages with the links for the other members and also to this communication page. Thanks.
2. Today I started looking into Preservation View page on the catalog.
Few notes for now; We will have to figure out a place / system to drop comments for each of the sections separately .

Sharada 9/17/201 14:15: Thanks Liza. I will double check in DublinCore (and MARC21) from now on.

Preservation View:
  1. Drop down menu choices for Condition should be arranged in a logical order.
  2. Ditto for all other drop down menu choices like durability (fragility) etc,..
  3. Explore alternate wording for ‘Fragility’
    1. LL 20150916: This vocabulary is not arbitrary. It comes from the "Dublin Core" list of metadata. Svetlana is our expert on this. I (Liza) couldn't find a better term with a quick search. How about "Physical condition". We need something like this to tell us whether we need to take immediate action to stabilize the item because it is deteriorating over time.
  4. Separate into two individual sections; 1st link/ URL ,2nd Thumbnail link
  5. Where Made: Explore other captions like Place of Origin or Place of Manufacture? or Originated from?
    1. LL 20150916: Not arbitrary. See Dublin Core.
  6. Do we have donor information stored somewhere else? Do we need that info in this view?
    1. LL 20150916: Donors should be entered into CiviCRM with their contact info. Eventually we'll figure out how to create links from the Catalog to CiviCRM so info about individuals and organizations can be retrieved.
  7. What do ‘has part’ and ‘is part’ imply? Should we be more clear about what part refers to?
    1. LL 20150916: Dublin Core term - See Relations
